Susan, a member of the European Hair Research Society, attended the 13th Annual Meeting in Genova Italy between 3 -5 July 2008.
A beautiful part of the Italian coast line, Genova has a feel of the old with cobbled streets and wonderful architecture and a very inviting waterfront area to enjoy.
The meeting was attended by members from across the world, including the United States of America, Canada, Australia, Japan, China, Germany, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Israel and Italy. Speakers presenting new research papers where well received. Each presentation was introduced by invited members of the Society who both encouraged comment and opened the way for questions and discussion.
A new annual award, the ‘Professor Jurgen Schweizer Research Presentation Award’, was introduced this year for the best original research presentation. It was presented to Dr Viljar Jaks for his research and presentation with the title ‘Lgr5 Marks Dynamic Hair Follicle Stem Cells’. This award has been supported by an educational grant from L’Oreal.
Susan said:
"The presentations included new research and good discussion of current knowledge. The scarring alopecias and the management of them were of great interest and in particular ‘frontal fibrosing alopecia’, a disorder that all practising trichologists see regularly. The section of the programme entitled ‘best cases ever’ enabled all at the meeting to recognise that we are not alone in our own particular quest for answers, be it for those in research or for those of us in practice. "
